News: Brewers Prepare for the New Season!

April 23, 2018

Well Ladies and Gents, the South West Baseball League (SWBL) 2018 season has arrived! Teams from across the South West were in action this weekend but unfortunately the Brewers will have to wait another week before they can kick off their campaign. The scheduled opening day match against the Exeter Spitfires had to be postponed by mutual consent due to issues with field availability. However, the Brewers were in good spirits and took the opportunity to head outside in the glorious Devon sun to participate in an additional training session.

The Newton Brewers have been working hard all winter in preparation for the 2018 campaign. Following a two week break in September, the team returned to Seale-Hayne sports centre for weekly training sessions led by Manager Julio Perez and Coach John Anderson. Throughout the cold winter, both Julio and John have had the team working hard (no pain, no gain!) focusing on all aspects of the Brewers offence and defence, and working hard on the squads fundamental position plays. This is the first time that the club has trained weekly through the winter and the turnout has been excellent. We have even picked up a few new players along the way and hope to continue this recruitment in the coming weeks.

On the 24th March 2018, four Brewers (Julio Perez, John Hendry, Charlie Capener and Craig Newbery-Jones) attended the inaugural SWBL AUA Umpire Training Course. The four players were joined by representatives from other clubs across the SWBL and instructed by Tug Wilson, league commissioner. It was an insightful and enjoyable day, even if the weather was a little cold and miserable! All four club representatives passed the course and are now qualified to umpire games in the SWBL. Well done gents!

On 8th April 2018, the Brewers took to the field to participate in a pre-season training day against the Plymouth Mariners on their superb diamond, Wilson Field, in Central Park, Plymouth. A great day was had by all. The Brewers displayed real improvement at bat and in the field, and clearly put their hard work in the offseason to the test. Thank you so much to the Plymouth Mariners organisation for facilitating this day and for all the support and assistance from their players and coaches.

Finally, the Brewers are pleased to announce that they have entered into a new partnership with Stover School, and Stover Field will be their home ground for the 2018 season! The facilities at Stover School are fantastic, and we have received a warm welcome from the school staff and ground staff. The Brewers are eagerly anticipating their first home game of the season which will take place on the 29th April 2018 when they are visited by the Bristol Bats. First pitch is scheduled for Noon (weather permitting!). Come down and support Newton Abbot's first and only baseball team! GO BREWERS! #GOBREWGO
